Berlin comes alive in the summer, and we’re excited to share our top 10 activities for enjoying the season in this vibrant city. We’ll focus on neighborhoods near our vacation rentals, including Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain, and Kreuzberg, which are among the most popular and diverse areas in the capital.
Treptower Park is one of Berlin’s largest and most beautiful parks. Located right along the Spree River, it offers plenty of opportunities for relaxation and entertainment. On hot summer days, the refreshing breeze is especially welcome. Notable attractions within the park include the Soviet War Memorial, dedicated to fallen soldiers of World War II, the Island of Youth (Insel der Jugend), which houses a cultural center and a historic bridge, and Plänterwald—a forest that smells wonderfully of wild garlic in spring and is home to an abandoned amusement park.
Exploring Berlin by boat is a fantastic way to experience the city in summer. The Spree River flows through the heart of Berlin, providing a unique view of key landmarks such as the historic center, government district, Museum Island, and the East Side Gallery. You can choose from various routes and tour operators.
If you’d like a different perspective on the Spree but have a limited budget for a boat tour, consider renting a pedal boat or kayak. Several rental stations are located along the river, such as at Urbanhafen, behind Freischwimmer in Kreuzberg, or near Treptower Park. A pedal boat accommodates up to four people and costs around 10 euros per hour. Drift along or navigate to specific destinations, like the Molecule Man—a massive aluminum sculpture rising from the water—or the Reichstag, Germany’s parliamentary building. Don’t forget sunscreen on scorching summer days! !Molecule Man

When the summer heat becomes intense, escape the city buzz with a trip to Wannsee, a large lake in southwest Berlin. Wannsee is a popular recreational area offering opportunities for water sports, hiking, cycling, and relaxation. Rent a boat, take a swim in the lake, or admire the historic villas along the shore. Notably, the House of the Wannsee Conference, now a museum and memorial, stands as a significant historical site.
Another delightful way to enjoy the Spree River is by having a picnic along its banks. The area between Prinzenstraße and Admiralsbrücke in Kreuzberg is particularly popular. You’ll find green spaces inviting you to linger. Bring your own food or grab something from one of the many nearby cafés. On warm summer evenings, musicians gather at Admiralsbrücke, creating a relaxed atmosphere. Plus, you’ll have a great view of the sunset.
The East Side Gallery is a section of the Berlin Wall that was painted by artists from around the world after its fall in 1989. The artworks depict various themes related to Berlin’s history and politics. One of the most famous images is the kiss between Erich Honecker and Leonid Brezhnev, symbolizing the brotherhood between the GDR and the Soviet Union. The East Side Gallery is freely accessible and stretches between Ostbahnhof and the Oberbaum Bridge. On sunny days, you can relax by the Spree River with a refreshing “Späti” drink after visiting the gallery. Consider crossing the Oberbaum Bridge and exploring Kreuzberg afterward.
Mauerpark is another site that commemorates Berlin’s division. It lies on the former death strip between East and West Berlin and is now a popular gathering place for locals and tourists. During summer, the park buzzes with activity. You’ll find green spaces, playgrounds, sports facilities, and a flea market held every Sunday. Don’t miss the karaoke sessions on the open-air stage—whether to showcase your singing talent or cheer on the brave performers.
From here you can also explore the
Mauerweg, a walk along the remainders of the Berlin wall with many interesting outdoor exhibits that explain the history of the wall and how people were trying to cross the heavily guarded border.
No Berlin summer is complete without a visit to a beer garden. Prater Biergarten is the oldest beer garden in Berlin, located on Kastanienallee—a lively street in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg. Enjoy a cold beer, hearty meal, or sweet treat in a cozy atmosphere. The beer garden operates from May to September and also hosts cultural events like concerts, readings, and theater performances.
Tiergarten, Berlin’s largest park, is especially inviting in summer. Stretching from Brandenburg Gate to the Zoological Garden, it offers a green oasis within the city. Take a break from the hustle and bustle, appreciate nature, observe animals, or have a picnic. Notable attractions in the park include Schloss Bellevue (the presidential residence), the Victory Column (a monument to German victories in various wars), and the House of World Cultures—an exhibition center for contemporary art.
If you’re in the mood for an outdoor movie night, head to the open-air cinema in Volkspark Friedrichshain. Sit on benches or the grassy area and watch films spanning different genres and countries. The program includes classics, art-house films, children’s movies, and original-language films. The open-air cinema operates from mid-May to early September, providing a wonderful way to enjoy Berlin’s balmy summer nights. Remember to bring something warm to wear, as even summer nights can get chilly. A seat cushion is also recommended!
The
Klunkerkranich
is a
rooftop garden—a cultural meeting point, bar, and event space. Here, you can indulge in art, music, food, and drinks. Klunkerkranich is situated on the top parking deck of Neukölln Arcaden, offering breathtaking views of the city. Attend one of the many events regularly organized here, whether it’s concerts, readings, workshops, or parties. Keep in mind that Klunkerkranich is open only during the summer months (May to September) and has a variable entrance fee
